Eastern mud turtle 
The anterior end of this turtle is toward the bottom of the picture. The triangular pectoral scutes and the double hinged plastron lead me to believe it is an eastern mud turtle (Kinosternon subrubrum subrubrum). Judging by the length of its tail, this turtle is a female. She wouldn't stick her head out to let me get a mug shot!

Happy Vernal Equinox
Ok, I confess, the picture of the toad singing was taken last summer. Since I have confined myself to the house today until all the laundry gets done, I figured I had better pull a picture out of my files. This is one of my favorites. Enjoy.

After two days of rain and chilly temperatures, it was nice to get out and walk around. The jelly fungi seemed to be everywhere I looked. This yellow one was really pretty -- the brown ones, not so much (if I post a picture of one of those I know I will get a comment or two from one person in particular :p)

I find this just a tad amusing, particularly the "anything you might have done that may have caused the error" part. Like what? Signing on? Or perhaps I didn't use the correct pressure when clicking on the Comment button...

One Strange Bird
He's back, yet again
When I glanced out the kitchen window a moment ago, I was only slightly surprised to see this now familiar beastie munching out on sunflower seeds under our platform feeder. The birds were ignoring him and he ignored me when I opened the window to snap this picture.
Since we first noticed him, almost three weeks ago, this opossum has become a regular feature in our yard. He meanders about, checking the compost pile, and now apparently the bird feeder. I have seen him stroll across our front porch and cruise down our lane. If we approach him, he first tries the big, bad, hissing 'possum routine, followed quickly by the fall over and pretend to be dead routine.
He has finally lost the last two or so inches of his tail -- it looked pretty gruesome before it fell off. Other than a few battle scars he appears to be pretty healthy. (I would guess so, since he is obviously eating well.)
If he persists in hanging around I may have to come up with a name for him.
Another sighting from my window today: a male sharp-shinned hawk perched in our heartnut tree, about ten feet from the window. He presented me with a lovely view of his back, it's easy to see why they are also known as "blue darters." Unfortunately for me, my camera battery was in the charger, not in the camera. Oh well, such is life.

Back Home
I am very happy to report that the beagle my husband found back in February has been reunited with his rightful owner. (We had been calling him Bailey and had pretty much figured we had acquired a second dog. ) Yesterday his owner came and got him after a friend had seen one of the flyers I had put up. Turns out the dog's name is Sam and he had gotten sidetracked by a deer trail while out rabbit hunting.
I'm glad he's back home but I find that I miss him -- don't tell anybody, though :)

A Frog in the Hand

Took me a while to find this elusive little frog as it sang in a puddle in a field. I zeroed in on him as he sang, but whenever I got close he would get quiet. Finally I was able to see him and swoop in for the catch. He cooperated nicely and was soon back out on the edge of the puddle trying to call in a female.
(The picture was there, honest!! Oh well, Blogger seems to be acting a little odd. I'll just send the picture again.)

This morning, my husband and I went out walking to see if we could find any bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) in bloom. It is a pretty little flower and there is a population of it about three-quarters of a mile from our house. We were unable to find any blooming so we decided to poke around in an adjacent area that at one time was used by county residents as an impromptu dump. This site holds everything from old washing machines to chamber pots, as well as quite a collection of bottles and jars. I have never been able to figure out why people insist on dumping trash in a swamp, but I digress...
I found several little terraria among the cast-off items. Mother Nature trying to make the best of a bad situation, I guess.
