House 'Possum

"Treebeard?"
"Yes, dear?"
"I think there's something in the stove."
"In the stove?"
"Well, in the drawer under the stove. It sounds pretty big. I'm gonna take a look..."

And what to my wondering eye did appear as I eased open the drawer beneath the stove? I saw an inquisitive little pink nose that I immediately identified as belonging to an opossum - an adventurous young opossum exploring the inside of the stove drawer. We have had this stove for about 12 years now and I never use the drawer or the broiler pan that came in it. The drawer is used from time to time by a field mouse or two wandering through, and I did find a lizard trapped in there one time. I did not expect to see a 'possum though. Could be what we've been hearing roaming around under the floorboards lately...

The ever stalwart Treebeard made a grab for it and had it by the tail for a brief second before it slipped over the back of the drawer and disappeared into the nether regions behind the cabinets. If it comes back we'll make another attempt to catch it. If not, c'est la vie, it's just a 'possum. Posted by Picasa

Ok, now of course I'm freaked out by the little visitor and would have had to prop open the door and grab a broom, but there's something else that disturbs me more.

HOW in the WORLD do you make quality cinnamon toast without using the broiler?!?!?! Is it time for Bloggy's Recipe Corner to swing into play?

I totally agree with Bloggy... but fried cinnamon toast is good too.

BUT!!! if I found a opossum in my house I think I would freak out. And I'm not real skiddish. BUT a opossum??

Cute when they're little, but nasty when they grow up...
...kinda' like cats.

We've had a few strange things in our kitchen, but . . . you win!

Have never had one in my house but my friend did once and she lives in a trailer park. I get them in the trash cans all the time - they get in an empty can and can't get out.
Like the snake info and pics. Nice to know there is someone else that is not afraid of snakes.
Never heard of a bird nesting in a tent catapillar web before.

Mr. B, I hate to tell you this, but I seldom ever eat cinnamon toast. With the exception of an occassional KK doughnut, I pretty much stick to all that whole grain-nuts-and-berries kinda stuff :)

KYBrat, 'possums aren't bad...if you scare 'em they just sort of flop over and play dead.

FC, I had a grown 'possum to take up residence in the closet under the stairs years ago. I was not pleased since that closet was where I stored my holiday decorations. That blasted 'possum made a bed out of the Christmas stockings I had made -- ruined them. Grrr. Now, about these feelings of yours toward felines...

OW, I hesitate to give you the entire list of critters that have been found in my house. We have a sign in the kitchen that reads: "If it walks out of the refrigerator, let it go."

Doubleknot, we were really surprised to find the bird nesting in the caterpillar web. I'm glad you like the snake pics -- so many people are needlessly afraid of reptiles.

eeeeeeeeeeeeeekkkkkkkkkkkkk!

:-) Actually, I saw this, read it to my hubby ("Swampy found an opposum in her stove!"), and said, "aww, it's kindof cute."

He was amazed--I've come a long way. Yet, your critter is certainly smaller and cleaner than our husky city feller!

OK...

Haha, I'm actually not suprised. Leave it to you to find a 'possum in your stove drawer. I'm actually sitting here laughing a bit myself. Did your lovely dog not come running? I know she had to have been inquisitive at least. :D
