Over in the Work Swamp

Another busy week and yet another week without home phone service -- well, not the whole week, just Monday morning through Thursday night :)

I don't have anything ready to share from the home swamp so I am posting a few pictures from the work swamp.

An inconspicuous wildflower from the work swamp...

You have to look closely to appreciate this one. Common anglepod - Gonolobus gonocarpus.

Not so inconspicuous fruit of the coral honeysuckle - Lonicera sempervirens.

I love this road. In fact, it's one of my favorites. What you can't see in this picture are the blackwater ditches on either side and the teeth-rattling holes hidden by the grass. I always drive slowly when I am patrolling this particular stretch. It would be embarrassing to end up in one of the ditches and besides, the bears like this road, too. Wouldn't want to hit one.

A well-used trail beside an enthusiastically marked tree. There's nothing subtle about a black bear :)

You know Sqrrrl, one of these days I'm going to have to post one of my edited pictures in a before an after mode. I'm forever adding or removing stuff to make them look like I want, and sort of neglecting to let everyone in on my little secret. Recently it wasn't blackwater I removed from in front of the drive-in screen, but a few pesky kids not paying attention to the show.

I too love the picture of the road and I was very impressed by the bear markings on the tree. We are just beginning to have brown bear sightings in our area and it's nice to know what to watch out for...besides the bear itself.

Neat road but somehow I have the feeling that mosquitoes might be a bigger problem than bears.

Ahh, you've picked out two of my favorite plants. Have they changed the climbing milkweed genus name again?? I'd just gotten used to rolling Matelea off my tongue, in such a gracious manner.

Recently a black bear was seen a coupla miles away, but I haven't seen any such indications. I sure wouldn't mind having them around.

Mr. B - children not paying attention at the drive-in??? What is this world coming to?

Abandoned - keep a look out for bear scat. There are few things as impressive and telling as a big ole pile of bear poo.

OW - the skeeters are nothing compared to the yellow flies :)

Wayne - I, too, regret the change from Matelea to Gonolobus. Matelea is so much more musical. Worse than just the genus name change, though, is the change in the family name. No longer is it Asclepiadaceae. Now it is Apocynaceae! Gimme a break -- I can't pronounce either one.
