Track Maker

Here's the little fellow that made the tracks in the post before last. I needed some toad tracks for an exhibit, but I couldn't find any "wild" ones. No problem. I mixed up a mud pie and added one toad. Unfortunately, the mud had a calming effect on the toad -- it just sat there. Guess it thought it was at a toad spa or something :)

After I gave it a little nudge,it hopped and I got my tracks. Toad returned to the wild and I saved my mud for future use.

Sorry I can't give you a complete scientific name on this fine amphibian. It belongs to the genus Bufo, but as to species...I just don't know. It has the characteristics of several species, so perhaps it is a hybrid.

You can lead a toad to mud, but you can't make it hop...unless you goose it.

Toad spa! Heh! I think you're right, why would you leave some cool mud on a hot day?

FC, as the older folks say around here, "It was right comical." The toad was hopping around like crazy in its temporary holding pen, wriggled like a maniac when I picked it up, then just went still when I put it in the mud. I swear I heard it say "Aaahhhh." Who can know what goes on in the mind of a toad...

Contrary to how you deal with toads, I jumped back and emitted a small scream when a large toad surprised me at my door step a few days ago.

I enjoy your enjoyment of the swamp creatures.

Belle - I've been startled a time or two myself by a toad hopping just under foot.

fronkex - The mud was nice, all cool and squishy. I'm glad you like the snake pictures. I am always thrilled to see a snake when I am out and about. They are such interesting critters.

eddie - Yep, he's a cutie all right. Toads are one of my favorite beasts.

As Flanders and Swann once sang of a "bold Hippopotamus":

"Mud, mud, glorious mud / Nothing quite like it for cooling the blood! / So follow me, follow, down to the hollow / And there let us wallow in glorious mud!"
