One Tough Mama

As soon as I approached, this mother lynx spider (Peucetia viridans) moved to protect her young. She was quite impressive, waving her long, spiky front legs at the camera lens.

Lynx moms are serious about their maternal duties...

...as this wheel bug (Arilus cristatus) found out the hard way.

A wheel bug is a formidable beast in its own right and can deliver a painful, piercing bite - I'd advise against picking one up.

The wheel bug as victim isn't quite so disturbing as Robert Frost's poem, "Design."
" . . .what brought that kindred spider to that height - Then steered the white mothe thither in the night? . . "

Such interesting pictures.

I love to see a wheel bug buying the farm. They really hurt.

Cathy,
Funny you should mention Frost. I found myself walking around all day Friday with "Two roads diverged in a yellow wood..." on my mind.

FC,
Yep, any of those critters with piercing mouth parts hurt like crazy.

I am a bit of a Robert Frost fan and actually am the lucky recipient of the third place award in the 12th annual Robert Frost contest. They invite the winners to go to the festival in April and read their poems next spring. I love wandering though a woods, but standing before a crowd has me just a titch conecerned. Poor me :0)
