It's been so dry here that box turtles have been hard to come by. I found this old girl on the highway one morning after one of the very few showers we've had. She looked familiar, and it could be that I have photographed her before. I need to go through all my box turtle pictures to be sure.
Wouldn't it be interesting to hear her life story? If only box turtles could talk...
After I took her picture multiple times I let her go where I found her - moved to the side of the road in the direction she was headed, of course ;) Live long(er) and prosper.

Very interesting turtle. Looks like it has had a hard life to me.
Star Trek and turtles.
Sigh...
She looks sad. I can see it through her eyes.

I especially like the close-up where you can see the "beak" really good.wb
She is quite a beauty. helluva tough time it looks like, but a survivor. Not much definition in terms of growth annuli so she must have quite a few miles on her but I can't imagine what kind of trauma would have caused that smoothness and discoloration on her carapace. weird. oh, how I wish you would tag and track her movements.
actually, on second glance, there seems to be a concavity in the plastron and the eye's a bit red perhaps? did it have a long tail, or a short stubby one and was the cloaca right at the edge of the plastron, or was their maybe a pinky-sized gap between the edge of the plastron and the cloaca? I'm betting this "her" is a "him".
Anonymous,
She was definitely a she. High domed shell and a little girl's tail. Can't go by the eye color around here and the picture is deceptive when it comes to the plastron - no real concavity there. She is a tough old girl and I hope she survives many more years :)
