Downy woodpecker, Picoides pubescens, waiting patiently for us to step away from his suet block.

I watched a Downy on our suet block this morning as a Cooper's flew into a nearby tree. That little Downy flattened himself so far against the suet to be missed, he nearly became the suet block!

Lynne,
We had a whole downy family in the yard this summer. It was fun watching the adult birds bring the kids to the suet feeders. The youngsters were very messy eaters.
We, too, have the occasional hawk to buzz through. I am always amazed at how very still the birds on the feeders become and remain until the threat passes.

The red headed woodpeckers at my old school site loved a creosoted old power pole just like that one. They were constantly tapping on it.
