Harlequin darners have a thing for trunks of trees. It is not unusual to find several at once warming up on the sunny side of a tree in the spring. This fellow was hanging out all by himself though...
That was a gray petaltail, but apparently there are a number of dragonflies that love to perch on vertical surfaces, and also find people attractive because of that.
Sweet baby!! I have a fascination for dragonflies, but find it difficult to sort through and remember all the details. This was fun. I checked out Wayne's links then went on to my own books - no gray petaltails listed for Cape Breton that I can find reference to (not much out there to reference for CB). Great photos! ~karen
The Gray Petaltail shows up here every few years, usually I find one on the wood fence or hail railing to the deck. Certainly they are here all the time, just we don't see them.

Great shots! This species only shows up rarely here, and only well east of my location. So I've never seen one before.
wayne,
I've never seen a gray petaltail, though they do occur in the state. The darners are abundant here however.
karen,
Next to frogs, dragonflies are my favorite critters. The little dears can be a challenge to ID though...
jason,
I bet you get a nice assortment of dragons down your way.
