Last Year At This Time...

...we were in a strange and wonderous place. A place where we had to wear long sleeves and sleep under blankets -- in June!! A place where morning came very early. A place where the woods smelled like Christmas...

East Grand Lake, ME (June 2004)

...and habored odd little red squirrels that ventured out to munch birdseed.

A place where moose chomped on glasswort by the roadside...

...and an unfamiliar frog hunted insects along a creek bank.

Wood Frog, Rana sylvatica

A place that captured our imaginations and our hearts...

Baxter State Park, ME

...and made us feel as if we had found a second home.

It does look rather nice.

Gosh I need a vacation.

Mr. B. I recommend that you take a trek to Maine -- beautiful scenery, tasty food!

But if you are a sweet tea drinker you better take your own -- folks up there seemed to think iced tea has to come ready made in bottles or cans...what a peculiar notion :)

Another one to add to my "places I want to go" list. I'll need several more lifetimes at this rate.

As we know, I am a man of contradictions. At home, sugar goes in my green tea. Out and about, I order unsweetened tea...and add sweetener. I just like to set my own level. :)

Did everyone see this one?

Bloggy, listen carefully...

Green tea - no sugar!

Artificial sweeteners - abominable! (Except for use by diabetics, of course)

There, I feel better.

Oh, and watch out for those caterpillars...

Looking good. I want to encounter a bull moose some day. I have only seen cows. I surely appreicated seeing the few that I have, but next time I wish for antlers.

To be even more specific, and odd, nothing in my hot green tea, real sugar in my iced green tea, sweetener in my regular iced tea...I don't know, it's just me. :)

AC, we lucked out when we went to Maine -- saw 8 moose in one day, including bulls, cows, and calves.

I made plaster casts of a couple of moose tracks and keep them on the coffee table in our den. People have a hard time trying to figure out where I found "deer" tracks that large :)

That's what I like about you, Bloggy. You're a complex individual ;)

Great pictures and poetry. I haven't been to Maine, though parts of it looked quite familiar. Glad to hear you enjoyed yourself. Too bad you couldn't detour to Vermont for a few days. :)

Haha...I never thought of it as poetry! Just observations :)

We did see a tiny bit of Vermont through the car window on our way home. My husband and I hope to make a trip back up that way and maybe spend a few days in both Vermont and New Hampshire.

Ah memories...I was going to write that I had been at Baxter Park about 10 years ago but checked my Appalachian Trail records and found that I was there in 1983. How time flies when one is having fun. Anyway, I have great memories of Maine! In the summer of 1983 I backpacked the 100 mile wilderness section of the Appalachian Trail and ended up at Baxter Park and climbed Mt. Katahdin. Did you climb up Kathadin? Did you walk the knife edge? Now there is a memory that cannot die!!!

We were only in Maine a short time (en route to Nova Scotia) but it sure was beautiful. We saw some of Acadia Nat'l Park.

Dean, unfortunately we did not get to climb Katahdin -- yet another reason we want to go back to Maine and spend more time.
