We often find sign of black bear on our property. This is one of several trees that show claw marks from climbing bears.

Color me ignorant. I didn't think black bears extended down that far -- not any longer at least. For whatever reason I think of them as bears of the boreal forest. I have seen cubs -- twice. And one tore into the shed at the cottage one year. Be careful about leaving garbage in the shed, especially in early spring.

I find myself visiting your great blog every day now so I've added Swamp Things as a link from ours, I hope that's OK with you.

By the way, I love your Thoreau quote.

at least the marks are in the trunk of a tree and not the "trunk" of a person...

The bears we have out this way, the San Gabriel Mountain foothills, prefer soaking in hot tubs and foraging for avocados.

AC, we have a fairly large black bear population around here. I see them more frequently in my work swamp than in my home swamp though.

Jim, link away! The Thoreau quote comes from his book, _Faith in a Seed_.

cookie jill, a black bear would be hard pressed to find a hot tub in my backyard :)
