Good guesses! Yes, both are kaleidoscoped images of a butterfly's wing. To be precise, the wing of an American Lady, Vanessa virginiensis.

Darn, my thunder was stolen, that is what I thought to after looking at these two images. Maybe butterfly wings that have been "kaleidescoped" in an image editing program?
