We had company out on the boardwalk today. A slight rustle in the leaves drew our attention, and pretty soon an opossum came wandering into view. As soon as it saw us it started looking for a way to avoid us. Its solution was to climb a grape vine.

"Yay! It's the Christmas Possum!"
(Love possums).
I am constantly amazed at the aversion most people have against opossums. I personally think they are amazing and consider them one of my favorite wild animals. Your visitor is adorable!
Awwwww, cute expression! They are dear to my wife, as she raised a baby 'possum when she was a child.
Must be 'possum season. You saw one, I saw one, my folks saw one...each in a different state!
It's possum time down South, and it's possum time up North. We have a regular visitor to our back porch, where my husband puts out food for a feral cat. Would you believe the cat is afraid of that possum? He backs right away if the possum gets to the food dish first.
So cute!! I used to have possums visit regularly when I lived in another place in another time!! I didn't realize that I missed them until your post made me flashback. Happy Christmas to you guys!! ~karen
Love it! I adore opossums. They're so doggone cute and ever so cool.
What? A 'possum outside?
Is the kitchen "No Vacancy" sign up?
Merry Christmas!
Hugh,
Yes, it is the Christmas 'possum! Have you been good this year?
MObugs,
I'm rather fond of them myself. They are such survivors -- provided of course that they stay out of the highway.
Woodduck,
I once took care of six babies from a road-killed mom. It was a lot of work, but they survived.
Ellen and Woodswalker,
It's always possum time around here. The little suckers are everywhere!
Karen,
Happy Christmas to you, too! Maybe Santa will bring you a holiday possum ;)
Jason,
They are pretty cool. They make me laugh every time I see them. Such worried looks come across their faces when they are confronted with an obstacle.
FC,
Well, the possums have to go outside sometimes. The kitchen doesn't have much to offer right now. Hope you have a Very Merry down your way!
Great photos. I'm fond of possums. We had plenty when I lived in Texas, but I haven't yet seen one in NYC. I know they're all over the other boroughs, but not sure about here in Manhattan. We have raccoons, skunks, and we even had coyotes last winter, so who knows?
Just love their bubble gum noses! Glad to have run across your site and looking forward to following your adventures :)
