Feeding Frenzy

Lunchtime lunacy! Treebeard came home to find the feeders low on juice and the hummers frantic. We have five feeders out and all of them were down to mere dribbles. Testy little hummers were expressing their displeasure with the situation. Treebeard mixed up the magic brew they craved and soon had them sipping away in a somewhat less crazed fashion. They are such little tyrants! Posted by Picasa

And to think that I get so thrilled when two hummers are feeding.....they're all on your side of the river.

Yeah, sometimes I worry about all our little hummers. We'll only be in this house for a couple of more years at most -- then who will feed all these ravenous beasties?

Maybe we can coax them over to our new property - yes, we bought more land. It is a plot of almost four acres about a half mile from where we live now. Wanna come help us build a house???

Yeah Land! Super!

I remember your hummer shots from last year and yet I still stare at your multitudes with jaw agape.
It's just incredible.

I find that my two pairs frequent the feeders most at dusk - I think they 'load up' before going to sleep...

I like this, because I feel good that there is enough flowering to feed them during the day. And they seem to prefer the flower nectar. Might be a variety thing. Plain old sugar water must get pretty boring!

Jenn, there is no shortage of blooming flowers here. The yard is full of trumpet creeper, as well as other native nectar plants, and the hummers come to the feeders all covered in pollen. They just seem to like the feeders, too.

Have hammer, will travel. And if memory serves, we owe you one.

Ah, but look at the population numbers for your site.

At the best of times, I might have two birds sparring at the feeder, and a third off scolding from a tree branch...

I see at least 18 birds in that single photo.

That's a lot of hungry beaks!
