Stinkhorn Fungus

This appears to be a Stinky Squid, Pseudocolus fusiformis. I found it quite by accident while I was looking for something else - perhaps Serendipitous Squid would be a better name...nah, it was pretty smelly so Stinky fits.

Whew! Those things are foul. The school mulched some paths with wood chips last year and the stinkhorns loved it. The maintenance guys couldn't believe the smell was coming from "those orange things".

FC,
We saw tons of dog stinkhorns on some mulch at a rest area recently. The, uh, aroma, was intense.

I suppose it's because I can't smell and didn't understand why the huge number of search hits I get on stinkhorns. Invariably they're "how to kill stinkhorns".
