The goldfinches are helping themselves to the seeds of the sunflowers that Treebeard planted around the edges of our vegetable garden. They perch atop the nodding heads of the flowers, grip with their toes and s-t-r-e-t-c-h down and around to pluck the seeds.
Sometimes those little yellow birds get down right snippy -- they fuss us out just for being near "their" sunflowers.

I planted a few sunflowers right in our suburban front yard, and the goldfinches have the same attitude here. These are ours, stay away please.

Heh. I remember that from when we planted them... wish we'd done that again this year. We do still have a good indigo bunting hornworm removal system in place though. :)
Those birds are having a veritable feast. But the sunflower doesn't look too happy.
The wild turkeys have been enjoying what the greedy goldfinches have dropped. We had 15 grazing along the garden's edge this morning. And Robert, you're right, the sunflowers look positively unhappy!
WoW! It seems like North Carolina is quite similar to the hills in SoCal....though the goldfinches aren't quite so grumpy here! They also enjoy our thistles-maybe even moreso than the sunflowers!(they're busy ripping the fluff out of the heads to get to the yummy seeds)
