Taking Wing

Just before leaving for work on the morning of the second, I made a quick trip out to the side yard to check on the black swallowtail chrysalises. Good thing I did, or I would have missed the show altogether! The "dill worms" of previous posts had emerged as butterflies sometime in the wee hours of the morning and were just about dry enough to fly...

Swampy- As usual I am again amzed by your photography! What beautiful pictures! FYI had to save another chipmunk! Have not figured out how they are getting into the porch. Safe to say the oven mitt and kitchen tongs didn't work this time. Finally laid a trail of bird seed to show it that the porch door was wide open. The lightbulb came on when it realized it was muncing a sunflower seed on the door sill! LOL! Keep up the beautiful photography!

Maineiac,
I am jealous of your chipmunk encounters! Treebeard and I were just talking about you this morning. We noticed on the national weather that you'll probably be in the 40s tonight -- perfect for a fire by the lake!!

My friend, Tess, grows parsley for the tiger swallowtails in her garden here in the Black Hills. It is worth the herb sacrifices for these beauties, isn't it!

I'm in awe! Knowing the science does not supplant the mystery. Or the delight. Thanks for the photos.

Swampy,
I was in your fine state this week, Murphy/Topton area. Norcalina does have a pretty impressive resume of habitats from mountain to marine.

Great wing shots!

Yay! Perfect timing. I was hoping we'd get a view of the finished product as it were. Thanks for the delightful photos.

Caroline,
We never mind sharing the herbs in the herb garden. The butterflies are definitely worth it!

Woodswalker,
I agree, knowing the science behind it doesn't diminish the wonder at all -- for me it actually increases it!

sweet bay,
At least the brand new ones will sit still long enough to get a photo :)

FC,
You were way up there! I'm glad you enjoyed your visit. She is a fine old state ;)

jason,
I feel lucky to have gotten to see the "finished" project. Now, if I just had your photographic skills...
