LOL! Treebeard will win by default. I really liked this picture -- it reminded me of frost on a window pane. Wish I could have seen it in person... :( He was out marking fire lines when he found a downed tree, literally covered in fungi. We've seen a lot of that thanks to Hurricane Isabel in 2003.
My Audubon mushroom book (a good reference, btw) has two entries that *sort of* look like this.
Carbon Antlers, or Candlesnuff Fungus (Xylaria hypoxylon), but googling it doesn't produce much that looks like yours.
More like yours, Coral Slime, which is under the Coral Mushrooms but is actually a slime mold. Ceratiomyxa fruticulosa. Here's a pic that's not nearly as good as yours: http://www.fscwv.edu/schools/scimath/neotropical/cer%20fru.htm

I think what you are looking at is not a fruiting body, but rather just some mycelium growing radially from a point of innoculation. So don't worry about trying to ID it.
