You still have FLOWERS on your Buttonbush! Up north, these bushes have long gone to seed. How long do yours keep blooming? And what's that speckled critter on the ground there? I can't quite make it out.
Woodswalker, There are only a few buttonbushes still in bloom here and there -- nothing like the number we have in mid-summer. The snake is a Northern Water Snake, a non-venomous species.
sweet bay, The snake is a Northern Water Snake, Nerodia sipedon. And yes, the pond is definitely a beautiful place to canoe. I have spent a lot of time there over the past thirty years and I never get tired of it!
Beautiful images! I was just checking on the buttonbush around the lake, so your picture is timely. But I especially love the water snake. What a handsome devil!

I just enlarged that critter shot and see very well what it is. I see it's a snake, anyway. Is that a rattler? Up north we don't see them that often.
Gorgeous pic of the Water Snake! Do you know which species? And a water lily too! Looks like a beautiful place to go canoeing.

Northern water snakes are quite handsome. So are banded water snakes. They both tend to outshine the larger, but more subtle brown water snake.
