Least trillium Posted by Hello

A fully opened Least Trillium (Trillium pusillum). These little flowers bloom in late February through March here. I had to hike a long way to see these flowers, but it was worth it.

The trillium, perhaps somewhat different than this variety (but I'm no expert), is Ontario's provincial flower. Strangely enough, I don't recall ever seeing them until I spent part of one spring in Ontario's near north, amidst the black flies, several springs past. Here, at least, one tends to find them on the opening edges of woodlands.

Michuli, is the mushroom you're asking about sort of phallic shaped? There is a red/orange mushroom called a dog stinkhorn (with good reason) -- the scientific name is Mutinus caninus. I don't believe stinkhorns are poisonous.

I'm so jealous of your least trilliums! :) Very pretty.

There is an Alabama variety but it's not near me. :(
