Life Can Be (in) The Pits

Check out the little blue-gray lumps in this skink's "armpit" ... those are ticks.
He had them on the other side as well.

Okay, all together now --- EEEWWW

eww! Will that kill a little fellow like him? Yuck!

I'm trying not to think of what it would be like to have bloodsucking parasites the size of saucers stuck to my armpits.

Nonetheless by the color of his head, he's still thinking about sex. Wow.

Swampy- As usual you've taught me something new. I never imagined an skink having ticks. So many exceptions to the zoological rules. Venomous snakes birthing young not eggs, cold blooded creatures with ticks, Augh! I think I have to go back to school and study zoology again.
Another moose yesterday. This one stood in the middle of the road leading down to the lake just off of the highway. He (velvet antlers just showing) very obligingly ambled back to the woods and the black flies.

Well, ectoparasites are never fun, but think of the wonderful name: skink ticks. I look forward to saying it someday.

"What are those?"

"Those? Those are skink ticks."

Nice shot, as always.
I tried to search to find what camera y'all are using.
Seems like I remember you saying, once, but I can't find it.
If you'd tell again, I'd appreciate it.

Tom,
But of course! One must check and check again :) This year I am shipping all the ticks I find on myself, whether attached or crawling, off to the state health department for a study being done. Sort of freaks some people out when I pull a vial of ticks out of my pocket...

Jen,
The little guy looked pretty healthy despite his passengers. I think he will be okay.

Wayne,
What a lovely visual image you have given me! And you're right, his mind is definitely on sex. Isn't that a beautiful red head?

Maineiac,
The world is indeed full of interesting things. I would love to see a moose in velvet, those antlers astound me.

Rebecca,
Skink armpit ticks, no less!

Woodduck,
My camera is a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ5. Treebeard uses a DMC-TZ1 -- at least I think that is what his is. The camera body is so worn from being pulled out of his pocket and then being shoved back in, it is kind of hard to read the label!

I wasn't thinking so much "ewww", as "awww". That's got to be uncomfortable.

pushesrb,
They didn't seem to bother him too much. He was zipping around eating ants and such.
