Look Sharp!

Posted by Picasa

While out on the trail scouting for a wildflower program I'm giving tomorrow I happened upon something unexpected. Look carefully at the photo. Can you see what I saw?

I'll be back later with additional pictures...

My first impression was timber rattler, but I think it's a hognose.

hugh,
What if I had added that the only reason I saw her was because I heard a faint, yet pleasant buzzing in the weeds?

Let me amend that...I don't really think of Virginia creeper as a weed. Let's call it trailside vegetation instead ;)

Ooh that does look timberish. Looking forward to more photos of that.

I had to "embiggen" the photo before I saw it. I wish I had your trained eye. (Let me know when you're done with it, okay?)

Hmm. Pygmy rattlesnake?

tai haku,
Timberish indeed! Well done.

Pablo,
Embiggen away! She was tough to spot.

Hugh,
Nope. You were right with your first impression. But around the common name is canebrake rattlesnake instead of timber - same species, different coloration.
