Last year's leaves are still hanging tight on many of the American beeches here. It adds a little color and relief to the landscape of otherwise barren, gray branches out in the woods. My eyes long for the greens of spring, but for now I will content myself with the whisper of the beech leaves in the wind.

The marcescence of the beech is even more beautiful against the backdrop of fresh snow cover! I remember reading that the leaves remain throughout the winter to protect the new buds from freezing. Truly a favorite of mine in the winter landscape, too! ~karen
Doesn't the beech lend a little life to the emptiness that winter leaves behind?
