Just a Pretty Beetle

I believe this is a goldsmith beetle, Cotalpa lanigera. It was hanging out on the porch door this morning.

Swampy- I didn't know insects could be so beautiful! I'm going to have to get an insect field guide! Maineiac

It's gotta be one of the scarabs, no? A lovely specimen, even if it is known to do significant damage to plant roots, were it feeds.

Very cool! Great looking beetle, Swampy. Seems like a rather friendly critter.

You should submit this to An Inordinate Fondness, the blog carnival about beetles. The next edition is hosted by me, so I'll include it if you would like.

I hope you're well!

Gorgeous beetle. I've never seen one before, except in field guides.

Greetings all,
I'm glad you like the beetle. It really was quite pretty.

Ellen,
Yep, it's one of the scarabs.

Jason,
I'll try to remember to submit it!

Goldsmith, indeed. The first picture makes it look as though he's exuding your ring.

That's a nice find. I've only ran into the species once in almost 30 years of collecting beetles.
