Walking the Line

The past two days were fun, tiring, but fun. One of a ranger's job responsibilities is to mark boundary line. In a swamp, boundaries can be challenging. We marked one really wet section on Tuesday -- only one picture to share from that boundary...

That was the easy part. I had to put my camera away for the rest of it. It's hard to keep a camera at hand when you are hacking your way through cane, walking logs and wading through water that's up to or well over your knees.

Not all parts of the swamp are wet though. Yesterday found us on high ground that was wrapped up in vines. Here you see me going through an "easy" part.

Uh oh, the swamp ate the ranger. I'm in there somewhere...

I live for days like these - and I say that with all seriousness. Yes, I do love my job! What made these days even better was the fact that Treebeard came along as a volunteer -- you gotta love a retired ranger who is willing and able to share his years of experience!!

Isn't it great to get paid for tromping around in swamps? I'm glad Treebeard was there to document your disappearance. That looks like the kind of place where one could be lost forever.

I wish I had become a ranger when I was making career choices! But, the next best thing is having a Ranger for a best friend! I have had the most fun! My ranger (The Ranger) has been my nature mentor for the past 5 or 6 years and in Cape Breton, there are lots and lots of places to go that most people don't even know about! He loves his job, too! Please tell Treebeard thank you for identifying that spider for me in my other blog (ksdoolittle). ~karen

I so envy you your job! It's something I've always wanted to do, but instead I fell into technology at an early age. Now decades later I realize I should have stuck with my first passion. You're such an inspiration!

Oh, I love the "in there somewhere" image. It brought a huge smile to my face!

Woodswalker,
It is fabulous to get paid to be outside -- unfortunately I have been inside much too much of late.

KaHolly,
I did other things before I became a ranger, but ranger is definitely a much better fit!

jason,
I was in my late 40s when I became a ranger...where there's a will there's a way! But trust me, technology pays better ;)
