A Very Fine Frog Indeed

My husband presented a program on frogs on Saturday night. He had everything from itty bitty cricket frogs...

...to great big bullfrogs.

The bullfrog, Rana catesbeiana, is our largest frog. Measured from tip of snout to base of, uh, tail, this species ranges in size from 3.5 to 8 inches (85 to 200 mm).

When a frog feels threatened, it will puff up its body. Pick up a toad sometime and notice how fat it gets (and don't worry if it wets on you, you won't get warts).

My, what big feet this frog has.

I think frogs and toads have the most beautiful eyes.

One last shot, a big smile for the camera, and we thanked the frog and let it go.

It wasted no time in returning to its home in the culvert by the office!

Gracious that's one big frog. I always think our bullfrogs are big but they're nothing compared to that. (At least he's the right color! :-) )

The bullfrogs are starting to call now. Outside my window, late at night, they enter my dreams. My strange brain interprets them as speaking, v e r y s l o w l y, and in a gutteral that my dreams can't quite make out. But they're definitely talking.

Dude. That thing is massive. What a dichotomy between the two species!

Wayne, I love to hear the bullfrogs when they start to call. It is such a deep and resonant sound -- to me it sounds like "bah-rooommm" instead of the "jug-o-rum" that is most often described.

I'm pretty sure this is the one that modeled for the sink-top sponge holder my grandmother used to have. Wonder what happened to that thing?

Thingfish, I wish I had a decent picture of our smallest frog, the Little Grass Frog (Pseudacris ocularis). Size range on that frog is 13 to 19 mm.

Wow! I knew bullfrogs but I never realized there were frogs so small. And there are smaller ones?! Makes me wonder what else I'm missing. :)

Love the froggy smile too!

He's a cheeky, little devil, isn't he? And he's a big boy. I love the photos. He seemed to take the photo op all in stride.
I'm betting there are lots of those bad boys out at my pond. They love to talk to each other.
