Timberdoodle

Posted by Picasa
Luckily, I saw this cryptic fellow in the middle of the road and stopped my truck before I hit it. American woodcocks are such cool birds and they have an amazing variety of common names: timberdoodle, bog sucker, hookum pake, and night peck. Awesome, don't you think?
Woodcocks probe in the soil for earthworms. Their bills are flexible at the tip.
Plus they can see a full 360 degrees without turning their heads.
How cool is that?

You must have excellent vision. I've never seen one before they get up in front of me.
And then I'm too awestruck to do more than open my mouth and get a big eyed look.
Happy trails.....

woodduck,
The only reason I saw this bird was because it moved slightly. I tend to pay attention to things that move in the road at work because I hate to run over anything.

Ha, ha, I pay attention to movement, 'cause I'm always looking out for Mr. NoShoulders...happy trails.....

woodduck,
Snakes are definitely one of the critters I am on the look-out for -- I absolutely love 'em and I hate it if I hit one while on patrol.

It's woodcock 1 woodcock is a woodcock, 2 woodcock are 2 woodcock. Not woodcocks. Also...another pet peeve is Canada Goose. The goose is named after the Country of Canada. It's a Canada Goose or 2 Canada Geese. Not Canadian Goose, or Canadian Gise, or Geeses, It's Canada Geese. Thanks, Keith from Maine.
