See The Snake

Posted by Picasa
Rough Green Snake, Opheodrys aestivus aestivus

This snake is one lucky critter. It came close to becoming road-kill today. Green snakes are very hard to see on a sand and grass road and I would have felt very sad if I had squished it. Luckily we both survived the encounter :)

I've seen a couple of green snakes in my Missouri woods, but none has ever stuck around long, much less pose so nicely for the camera.

I agree with Pablo, that's one photogenic snake!

What an awesome shot. My only encounter with green snakes in Ohio has been with the smooths, and they typically bolt into the grass in a flash. Great capture.

Great picture--just posing in the middle of being on his way.
And a very pretty snake!
Have never seen one.

I think the green color makes the snake seem less ominous... almost friendly.

pablo,
Green snakes generally move on their way quickly. This one was just being lazy, I guess. Or perhaps it was amused by the lady with the camera stretched out on her belly on the road...

Bob,
I was lucky that this one was so co-operative. And she was quite photogenic.

Tom,
No smooths here, just the roughs. We have tons of them here - perfect habitat.

Nina,
Hopefully you will get to see one some day. They are such beautiful snakes!

Susan,
Green snakes are not the least bit aggressive. If you catch one the worst it will do is musk on you!

I haven't seen a green snake in years. I'm glad you saved this one.

wren,
I consider myself lucky - I get to see green snakes quite often. And it would have been very upsetting to me if I had run over this one.
