Dog Days Indeed

This cicada was having a very bad day -- but at least the hornet was happy.

Hornets eat cicadas? You don't say! Swamp Things is more educational by the day!

just exactly what IS going on here? It looks more like a private moment, then dinner for 1!

Hornets worry me.

I watched a slender wasp toting a paralyzed green caterpillar into it's burrow the other day. Couldn't help feeling a little sorry for the caterpillar, something about being eaten alive while paralyzed just gives me the creeps.

hornets are insectavors? i thought they only pollenated the plants?

bad hornets! one stung a very sweet young boy i know this summer--got wrapped in his sock. the boy's brother was sad that i threw away the sock b/c he loves all living things . . .

SQMojo, just about all wasps eat insects and/or spiders. Some species, like yellow-jackets, will even go after cooked food. I have seen them busily nibbling away on picnickers hamburgers (as well as on the watermelon and whatever else struck their fancies).

I imagine I would fight back if some big giant stepped on me, so don't be too hard on the hornet. It was only trying to protect itself.
