All sorts of things grow out on these stumps: wax myrtle, buttonbush, rose bushes, poison ivy, ti ti, various grasses, sedges, red maple, loblolly pine...the list goes on. They are fascinating spots. Some even have resident five-lined skinks!
Is this pond an impoundment or part of a river floodplain? I'm guessing the large stumps are leftover from cypress logging in the past? It certainly is pretty.

What kinds of plants grow on these islands?

FC, it's an impoundment. A stream was dammed in 1811 to create this millpond. The cypress was logged about the time the stream was dammed.
