A lichen mosaic for your Monday.
There are several American beech trees in the home swamp that sport marvelous quilts of various lichens.
Wish I could give you IDs for them...but alas, I cannot.

Swampy-Love the latest pics. The mosaic might inspire a quilt someday. In answer to your question, they are feeding the cranes corn, something the encounter during migration in the fall. Some of the remote territorial birds have been spotted at deer feeders on private property. If they get accustomed to coming to the feeders they might shift to crane chow. I'll keep you informed. Glad you like the lichens. I love all the different patterns - a quilt would be awesome if you could find the right fabrics.
Cranes at feeders would be a sight to see. Hope the idea works and the cranes get the food they need.
Swampy- Many of the crane territories that are off the Refuge are near civilization or hunting leases. These birds have encountered deer feeders and have been observed feeding from them. The challenge now is to convince the birds deep in the Refuge that it is okay to approach this strange, tall brown thing that could be a predator. There are positive signs that some of the birds have been approaching the feeders and hopefully this giant experiment will work. If not, their chances of a good breeding season are not look too good. I had drought! and developments that deplete much needed resources like water! Maineiac
