Took this just after sunset this evening, hence the need for the flash. The photo captured just some of the hummers coming in for a nightcap. Guess it's time to put out an additional feeder.
Last summer we fed 147 pounds of sugar to these greedy little creatures. You should see the looks we get at the grocery store...our cart is full of whole grains, fresh fruits and veggies, organic this and that, no junk food of any type and then there are the 25 pound bags of sugar!

Now that's incredible. We have a feeder at the cottage, but can't get more than one to land at a time because they spend all of their energies chasing each other away. I keep aking them why they all can't get along.
When the first couple of males arrive, usually in late March or early April, there is much fussing and fighting. The females come in about a week later and things settle down. Once we have 6 or so coming to the feeder, the major battles stop. At the height of the season we will have upwards of fifty hummers using our feeders. We go through well more than a gallon of sugar solution a day at that point.

My sister used to have hundreds but we've never been so lucky. More this year than last though, so maybe we're building them up!
That might explain it. We only get a few at our northern outpost. I would say about three or four last year. Perhpas there's not enough of a mix to promote civility.
