This newly emerged dragonfly, one of the basket tails, was having a hard time with the blustery winds today. My hand made a convenient spot to stop and take a breather. Posted by Hello

For some reason, dragonflies and damselflies tend to land on me -- usually when I'm paddling around in my canoe or kayak. I have one particular hat that certain damselflies seem to find irresistible. Now if I can just figure out how to take a decent picture of something sitting on my head...

how did you capture the detail of its wings like that? curious how his markings remind me of a bumble bee. can dragonflies sting?

SQ, I used the super-macro feature on my camera to get in close to the dragonfly, hence the wing detail. And no, dragonflies don't sting or bite (unless you are holding one that doesn't care to be held) and are great to have around since they eat other insects that do sting or bite!

Michuli, the angle of the picture makes the dragonfly look larger than it actually is. This one was about 1.75 inches. Some of the dragonflies we have around here, like the Swamp Darner, average about 3.5 inches. (You have the Swamp Darner down in your part of the state -- have you been to Lake Waccama State Park? It's out on 74, probably less than hour west of your location. It would be a great place to see dragonflies.)
